For me, Thanksgiving is not necessarily a time of pinpointing events about Pilgrims on Plymouth Rock. Rather, I believe Thanksgiving commemorates charity in our neighborhoods and around the world.
During this time of year, I notice that people are choosing to relinquish themselves from self-centered behavior and lean into giving more. This is evident with meal sharing among organizations and "friends giving" in neighborhoods, and churches. Acts of love toward strangers inspire me.
For example, community projects are a good way to connect with others and show acts of charity toward strangers. The event, Annie's Way originated from a warm-hearted woman who set out plates of Thanksgiving food for friends and strangers. Her charity grew popular over time and the effort now feeds thousands of local people who would generally have nothing for Thanksgiving dinner.
"Annie's" actions stem from those poignant words of Matthew's Gospel; "just as you did it to one of the least of these, …you did it to me." 25:4.
So, this year I will lean in, venture in faith, and with much inspiration dish wholeheartedly with hundreds of volunteers to serve others.
