July 9, 2023- The concept of the Word is an important part of our faith; as Christians, we are not a “religion of the book”, but a religion of the Word Who is a Person — Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word.
When the Father spoke at creation, there came forth word and breath: Christ is the Word and the Holy Spirit is the Breath. As such, the spoken word is powerful (as we reflected on Sacred Scripture). But in order to make it even more sacred, the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.
Now, by virtue of that Incarnation, our worship takes on a new level, far surpassing the liturgy of the Hebrews that served as a precursor. For Christ came down to us in the flesh, and now He wishes us to follow and return to Him.
This can be seen in the Liturgy of the Word, in which He speaks to us, and even more in the Liturgy of theEucharist, in which He comes down to us and gives Himself to us completely. Now because of the Resurrection, Heaven is open to us, and Christ calls us to follow in word and deed.
Do I take seriously the power of my words, and seek to use them for God’s glory and the salvation of souls? Do I recognize how powerful it is for the Word to become flesh, just like mine? Do I aspire to the kingdom of Heaven, by offering God my words and deeds?
