Advent marks the start of a new liturgical year for Catholics. The word “advent” derives from a Latin word that means “coming.” This season begins four Sundays before Christmas and is marked by expectation, hope and joy. It is a time of anticipation and spiritual preparation as we look toward the celebration of Christ’s birth. We are reminded that He came then amid poor and humble surroundings and He will come again some day amid glory and majesty.
On each of the Sundays of Advent, we light an additional candle of the Advent wreath. Its circular form and evergreen branches represent the unending love of God and the promise of eternal life in Christ. Each candle reminds us that Jesus came to replace the darkness of sin with the light of saving grace.
Parishioners can use the resources below to look beyond the commercial aspects of the season and to prayerfully reflect on the greatest Gift ever given -- Jesus Himself.
